Pour beaucoup d'artistes contemporains chinois, l'iconographie de leur nation a servi de principale source d'inspiration et de création.
Shen Jingdong utilise aussi ces icônes communistes dans ses peintures et sculptures, mais il le fait d'une manière entièrement nouvelle. Il peint les soldats et l'univers qui l'a entouré durant ses seize années passées dans l'armée.
Shen Jingdong présente ses soldats dans la lumière la plus brillante avec dans son esprit les icônes de Mao Zedong, les BD Japonaises, les guerriers en terre cuite provenant de tombes anciennes et les enfants soldats dans la "Eight Route Army". Pour lui, ils ne sont pas que de simples machines à tuer, mais plutôt des objets de consommation, des jouets, sortant tout droit d'un rayon de grand magasin ou d'une chaîne de montage.
